Non-members are welcome for a small fee.

Learning objectives:

  1. Learner will be able to define moral distress
  2. Identify how navigating moral distress can assist in careful ethics analyses of difficult cases.
  3. Learner will be able to apply concepts in ethics that guide practice.


About the Presenter

Lucia D. Wocial, PhD, RN, FAAN

Nurse Ethicist

Dr. Wocial is the nurse ethicist and is part of the faculty for the clinical ethics fellowship at the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics (FCME) at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Her clinical background is in neonatal intensive care.  Her current clinical practice is ethics.  She leads the Unit Based Ethics Conversation (UBEC) program through FCME.  She co-chairs the ethics consultation service sub-committee and is an active member of the ethics consultation service at the academic health center for IU Health in Indianapolis.  She created the Moral Distress Thermometer, an instrument that is used to measure moral distress of clinical care providers.  Her current research focuses on interventions to reduce moral distress and increase moral agency of professional caregivers.  She is a certified healthcare clinical ethics consultant.
